Our Studio

Uniform and Dress code

There are different dress codes for the different dance styles offered at Studio 23.

Our Studio Colours

Our studio colours are purple and black so please wear them loud and proud! We have a studio uniform available for purchase and although it is not compulsory, we love when our students come to class wearing it as it makes them feel part of the Studio 23 family. Our uniform includes t-shirts, tank top, shorts and hoodies.

Ballet Attire

Ballet students are asked to wear firm-fitting attire to class such as a leotard, skirt and tights for girls and a tight t-shirt and shorts/tights for boys. This allows our teachers to correct the students’ posture and alignment to ensure precise and safe dance technique. During the colder months tight fitting layers such as a cross-over or long sleeve t-shirt can be worn to class and taken off as is comfortable.

Leather ballet shoes are the preferred shoe for younger students, whilst canvas shoes are suitable for vocational students (Intermediate Foundation and above). Although vocational students may be permitted to wear pointe shoes at the discretion of teachers and health professionals, they are not compulsory for non-exam students attending these classes.

For students sitting a graded ballet exam, character shoes (low heel) will be required whilst character skirts may be borrowed from the studio.

All ballet students with long hair are strongly encouraged to wear their hair in a bun.

All other styles

Students may wear any clothing that is suitable and comfortable for dancing in to these classes. Whilst Studio 23 uniform is encouraged, it is not compulsory. A t-shirt, singlet, shorts and pants are all suitable attire.

If students are already wearing a leotard from the prior ballet class, they can put on a skirt, shorts, pants or t-shirt over the leotard to make them feel as comfortable as possible.

All students with long hair are asked to tie up their hair in a ponytail or a bun, for safety reasons.

Appropriate shoes for these classes are as follows:

  • Jazz – camel or black jazz shoes (lace up or slip on)

  • Contemporary – bare feet or foot thongs or half ballet shoes

  • Tap – camel tap shoes for girls up to Level 4 (buckle or velcro strap), black tap shoes for girls in Level 5 and above, and boys (lace up)

  • JFH – jazz shoes or street shoes/sneakers

  • PBT – bare feet

Second hand shoes

At Studio 1, a range second-hand shoes are available that have been generously donated by other families of the studio. We thank all students and parents who have donated their outgrown ballet, tap, jazz and character shoes to our second-hand shoes box and encourage everybody else to do the same, helping out the next person that comes along.

Before purchasing a new pair of shoes, check out our shoe boxes to see if we have a size that might fit you (a fitting pair of second hand shoes is not guaranteed).

Where to purchase dance clothes and shoes

If you need to purchase dance clothes or new dance shoes, our recommended local dance shops are:

  • Beat Street Dancewear (340 Railway Parade, Carlton NSW 2218)

  • Bloch Miranda (593 Kingsway, Miranda NSW 2228)

Often dance clothes can also be found at retailers such as Kmart, Target, Big W and Best&Less.

Tights and ballet socks (for young ballet students) are available for purchase at Studio 1. Please ask a teacher for assistance.

eXAMS

Studio 23 provides diligent and hard-working students the opportunity to do examinations in RAD classical ballet and Glenn Wood Tap. Entry into an examination is at the discretion of our teachers and Miss Beth with the students’ participation, skill level and attendance taken into consideration.

In order to meet the specified hours put forth by the RAD, all students in Grade 1 and above who wish to participate in a ballet exam must attend two ballet lessons a week from the beginning of the year.

All ballet and tap classes are catered towards both exam students and non-exam students.

Concert

At Studio 23, one of the most exciting and memorable times of the year is our concert where students from every class get an opportunity to showcase their skills and perform for their friends and families at a professional performance venue.

Usually occurring towards the end of the year (October to December), this experience is extremely rewarding for both students who are able to show off what they have learnt throughout the year and parents who can sit back and enjoy an exciting show.

Participation is not compulsory but highly encouraged as it is always a rewarding experience.
